Serengeti National Park is the large conservation area located in the northern Tanzania. It is one of the most famous and popular national park in Africa, known for its vast savannah plains, diverse wildlife and the annual wildebeest migration.
The park covers an area of over 14,750 square kilometres and is home to a wide variety of animals, including over 70 species of large mammals and over 500 species of birds. Some of the most well-known animals found in the park include lions, leopard, elephants, giraffes, zebras and wildebeest among others. The park is also home to several endangered or threatened species, such as the African wild dog, cheetah, and black rhinoceros.
One of the main attraction of Serengeti National Park is the annual wildebeest migration which takes place from around November to July each year. During this time, millions of wildebeest, zebras and other herbivores move in a circular migration pattern in search of fresh grass and water. This is a spectacular event that attracts visitors from all over the world
The migration begins in the southern corridor of Serengeti, where the wildebeest give birth to their young in February and March. As the rainy season ends, the herd begin to move northward following the new grass growth and seeking water source.
By June, the heard have reached the western corridor of Serengeti and start to gather in the Grumeti River area. This is a dangerous time for the wildebeest, as the must cross the crocodile-infested river to continue their journey
In July August, the migration moves further north into the Mara River are, which is the scene of another treacherous river crossing. The herd remain in the northern Serengeti and Masai Mara until October, when the rains starts to return to South.
Finally, in November and December, the herds begin to move southward again, returning to the southern Serengeti to give birth to the next generation of wildebeest and start the cycle anew
In addition to its wildlife, Serengeti National Park also feature a range of diverse landscapes, from grassy plans to rocky outcrops, wooded hills, and riverine forest.
